What do coffee, arepas, roses, and Shakira have in common? The beautiful country of Colombia! It’s also home to the crazy, gorgeous La Tatacoa Desert and the magnificent Salt Cathedral of Zipaquira. Did you know that Colombia is the third largest coffee producing country in the world, behind Vietnam & Brazil?

More than 50 years of armed conflict (the longest running civil war in Latin America) have displaced millions of people both within the country and beyond its borders. A peace agreement signed in 2016 between the government and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) ended hostilities for a time. But enormous agitation and tension in Colombia has continued since then due to pandemic lockdowns, economic issues, inequality, and the lack of social mobility that has yet to be addressed.

About the producer: Victor Felix has been in coffee since a young age as his parents are coffee growers. When he got married he and his wife, Blanca Rubi, bought their own farm in the rural area of Pitalito (south of the Huila region) and named it La Fortuna because they knew that the piece of land would bring good fortune and luck.

Their journey in coffee has been going strong for 35 years now but it was three years ago they made the switch to “specialty” coffee. This change was motivated by the idea of providing a better future for his family and having a better income. Victor wanted to provide a better future for his family and have a better income, so he studied coffee and has improved the cup quality and the coffee trees on his farm.

Also, and most important to him, coffee has united the family and he is proud that they all work together, achieving what they have today. The future looks bright, but it requires a big effort – one of the main challenges they face is the shortage of coffee workers. As part of his future plans for the farm, Victor Felix wants to improve his infrastructure, have new varieties, and also plant native trees.

10% of sales from all Get Mad coffee and merch goes to our partner organizations who are doing the real, hard work to truly make change amidst incredible injustice.
