This Perla del Otún lot is a part of Qima’s Competition and 90+ Series, which comprises exotic and incredible varietals that Colombia is known for. It was grown at an altitude of around 1,700-1,800 MASL in Risaralda department of western-central Colombia.

Located in the western central region of Colombia, the department of Risaralda is distinct, special and unique. Along with the departments of Caldas and Quindio, Risaralda constitutes Colombia’s renowned Coffee Triangle. Coffee shapes the lives of many residents here

and is an integral part of the region’s identity. Given its fertile soils, optimum climate, and high-altitude terrains – ideal ingredients for cultivating specialty coffee – coffee production assumes an important economic significance. In addition to being globally recognised for

its high-quality coffee, Risaralda is also known for its commitment to sustainable farming practices.

Risaralda is blessed with remarkable natural beauty and diverse ecosystems. Home to stunning cloud forests, lush mountains, and picturesque landscapes, it encompasses several protected areas. This includes national parks like Los Nevados National Natural Park, where visitors can explore unique flora and fauna, hike to snow-capped peaks, and witness breathtaking waterfalls. A wild, ancient and rare coffee varietal, Sudan Rume was first discovered in 1940 and is said to have been cultivated in present-
day South Sudan’s Boma National Park, which borders Ethiopia. It
is parent to some of the well-known coffees today, including SL28. Today, it is used primarily for coffee breeding purposes, owing to better disease resistance versus other Arabica varieties. Our farming partners are among the few around the world who grow Sudan Rume commercially.
