Meet Forbidden Fruit—our ever-evolving tribute to the untamed beauty of natural process African coffees.
Once upon a time (okay, 2015), Stephen Nendela moved back into his childhood home in Eldoret. But instead of coasting on nostalgia or growing more sugar cane like everyone else in the region, he flipped the script—and the farm—and planted coffee. This wasn’t just a hobby project or a midlife crisis. It was the beginning of something sacred.
Today, Stephen and his wife Lilian are running Nawiri Estate (aka “Muinami,” his surname and Kikuyu for “those who work”—and work, they do). Their farm in the cold, high-altitude Cherengany Hills is divided into seven terraced plots, each lovingly planted with different coffee varietals. It’s the kind of place where bees buzz in Acacia shade, cranes visit like seasonal monks, and guests are required to plant a tree instead of signing a guestbook. Real talk: if Eden had agroforestry, it might’ve looked like this.
This lot represents a new wave in Kenyan coffee—a break from outdated systems and middlemen-heavy exports. Thanks to recent reforms and an emerging direct trade infrastructure, producers like Stephen are finally getting the visibility and voice they deserve. And you're getting a cup that's not only meticulously grown and processed, but also part of a greater transformation in how Kenyan coffee moves, tastes, and tells its story.
This coffee is wild. It’s seductive. It’s unapologetically natural. Just like the snake intended.
